Sample itineraries: Danakil depression

This trip leads us to the Danakil depression:

  • Day 1, Mekele – Hamedela: Drive from Mekele to Hamedela via Berhale where the Danakil depression begins. In the small town Berhale you see the long camel caravans transporting salt to the towns nearby, 4hrs drive. In the afternoon visit the salt lake with coulorful sunset. Overnight in Hamedela, camping.
  • Day 2, Hamedela – Dallol – Hamedela: Drive to Dallol, one of the lowest points on earth (116m below sea level), walk around to see the coulorful sulfuric field, watch the breaking of the salt from the ground, cutting into rectangular pieces and loading on camels. Overnight in Hamedela again.
  • Day 3, Hamedela – Dodom: Drive from Hamedela to Dodom in crossing many small villages, enjoying the view, leave the asphalt road to a very bumpy road to drive on the landscape of solidified lava rock, sand and the occasional palm lined oasis. After having an early dinner in Dodom, walk in the evening to Erta Ale to see the always active volcano of the boiling lava lake, this the highlight of the trip, 3hrs walk. Overnight in the mountains very close to the volcano, camping.
  • Day 4, Erta Ale – Dodom – Mekele: Wake up early in the morning, watch the colorful sunrise, and walk downhill to Dodom, we have late breakfast in Dodom and after a short break and packing the stuff drive back to Mekele and then fly back to Addis or to your onwards route. Overnight in Mekele or Addis.

This itinerary can easily be combined with the Northern Historic Route.
